Zonolite Attic Insulation Trust (ZAI Trust)

Reimbursement Funds up to $5,250

Vermiculite

The ZAI Trust was established to raise awareness about the potential health risks of asbestos-containing vermiculite insulation.

Zonolite Insulation is the trademarked name of a product mined in Libby, MT, and sold as attic insulation between the 1940's and mid-1980's. Consisting of the naturally occurring mineral vermiculite, Zonolite was used for decades to insulate millions of American homes, including Wisconsin homes.

This attic insulation was typically gray-brown or silver-gold in color, consisting of a pebble-like texture. The product is known to be contaminated with asbestos, a known carcinogen. Exposure to asbestos can lead to serious health issues, including asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma.

Steps to Participate

  • Hire a professional to collect a sample of your attic insulation.

  • Have the sample tested by an accredited laboratory to confirm it is Zonolite and contains asbestos.

IDENTIFY ZONOLITE INSULATION

  • Do not attempt to remove or disturb the insulation yourself, as asbestos fibers can become airborne and pose serious health risks.

3

Hire a Professional for Safe Removal

  • If Zonolite is confirmed, contact a licensed asbestos removal company to safely remove and dispose of the insulation

  • Submit proof of Zonolite insulation, including lab results, photos of Zonolite bags, or purchase records.

  • Provide documentation of removal costs, including contractor invoices and proof of payment.

5

Receive Reimbursement

  • The ZAI Trust reimburses up to 55% of removal costs, with a maximum reimbursement of $5,250, depending on the year in which the removal occurred.

  • Claims are processed in the order received, and reimbursement may take time.
